Ethical Considerations : A Guide

Assists researchers in order to ensure compliance with regulations, university policies, and accreditation standards that are applicable to research activities, including 1) use of human and animal subjects in research, 2) biological safety, 3) pre-award grants administration, 4) export controls, 5) research misconduct, 6) responsible conduct of research training, 7) responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, 8) registering and posting research results in www.ClinicalTrials.gov, and 9) use of controlled substances.

The primary goal of the HRPO is to balance the protection of human
subjects while promoting and facilitating the research enterprise, and to
maintain an open and cooperative relationship with the research
community. Before a research project involving human subjects is
initiated, it must first be reviewed and approved by the IRB.

The committees are guided by the goal of assuring humane care and
the use of animals in research. They ensure that a minimum number of
animals are used to obtain valid data and that appropriate procedures
are used to reduce pain and distress in animals.

Each Fall, the RCO coordinates a seminar series led by faculty members covering RCR topics. Sessions are held in person downtown and online via Zoom.

All Tulane researchers must complete the CITI Training Program. CITI provides training on many different research topics including: Animal care and use, good clinical practice, information privacy and security, human subjects research, responsible conduct of research, and many more.
