Transformative Open Access Publisher Agreements

Information and guidance on publisher waivers for Tulane authors' open access article publishing fees

Wiley Open Access Description

Tulane University Libraries has reached an open access transformational agreement with Wiley, a global leader in publishing, research and education. This agreement will provide Tulane University Libraries affiliates with free access to Wiley’s complete journal portfolio and enable participating researchers to publish accepted articles open access in all of Wiley and Hindawi’s more than 1,800 hybrid and gold open access journals.

The agreement took effect on January 1, 2023.

Tulane authors can explore the following page on the Wiley Author Services website, which provides information on their eligibility for open access publishing coverage under the agreement. The following are author guides that cover the process of submitting articles for open access and that would have article publishing charges waived.

The agreement does have some limits. It will allow for up to 37 Tulane author fee waivers during the first year, eventually increasing to 40 in 2026. The cap is based on the university’s publication history, however, and is proportionally in line with the library’s other open access agreements.

Wiley is one of the world's leading society publishers, publishing nearly 2,000 journals with over 8 million articles. Half of its journals are published in partnership with international scholarly and professional societies. In addition to research in STEM fields, Wiley offers a full range of titles that cover a spectrum of life, health and physical sciences, social science and the humanities. Wiley is the publisher of an abundance of titles ranked at the forefront of their field. Some of the high-impact STEM journals in the Wiley Online Library include Advanced Materials, EMBO Journal, Hepatology, Journal of Geophysical Research, Arthritis and Rheumatology, Cancer, Annals of Neurology, Advanced Functional Materials, and Ecology. Its well-known titles in other areas include Strategic Management, Health Economics, Journal of Communication, Modern Language Journal, Criminology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Population and Development Review, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Language Learning, Child Development, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Journal of Marriage and Family. See this complete list of Wiley journals, which also includes former titles and ceased publications.

Globally, Wiley has achieved open access partnerships with over 2,200 institutions spanning 23 countries, which provides the opportunity to publish more than 69,000 open access articles each year. Wiley established its first US open access arrangement in a pilot with Iowa State University in 2021 and has more recently completed open access agreements with several groups of libraries in large consortia based in California, Ohio, and the Northeast. Tulane is among the first US libraries to establish a similar agreement with Wiley independently.
