Germanic and Slavic Studies Collection Policy

Language and Geographic Considerations

Germanic: German and English language materials are collected. Materials in other languages are collected selectively at the request of the faculty.

Items focusing on the literature and language of Germany are sought. German studies items focusing on Germany (for the period of 1945-1989, both East and West) are sought. Items focusing on the German literature and language of Austria, Switzerland, and émigré communities worldwide are sought selectively. Items on other Germanic languages of Northern Europe are excluded, unless specifically requested by the faculty.

Slavic: Russian and English language materials are collected. Materials in other languages are collected selectively at the request of the faculty. For Russian history and politics, primarily Russian language materials are collected.

Materials focusing on Imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and contemporary Russia. Materials on other Slavic languages and literatures of Eastern Europe and the non-Russian former nations of Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union are collected at the request of the faculty. Historical, political, and other social sciences on the Russian Federation are sought, and such material on other successor states of the Soviet Union are sought selectively. Historical materials focusing on medieval Russia (Muskovy, Novgorod) are sought selectively.

Place of Publication: Publications emanating primarily from the Russian Federation, Germany, Western Europe and North America are sought. Publications emanating from other regions can be selected at the request of faculty.
