Abolition: A World without Prisons & Police

Formed in 1997, Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the prison industrial complex (PIC) by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. CR believes that basic necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure. CR is a national grassroots organization, meaning it has members across the US while primarily organizing through local chapters.

Project NIA — “nia” meaning “with purpose” in Swahili—is a grassroots organization that works to end the arrest, detention, and incarceration of children and young adults by promoting restorative and transformative justice practices.

One Million Experiments is project exploring snapshots of community-based projects that expand our ideas about what keeps us safe. Includes a growing database of projects, accompanying podcast, educational resources, and more.

Interrupting Criminalization is an initiative led by researchers Mariame Kaba and Andrea J. Ritchie. They create resources, develop containers, and weave cross-movement networks, building capacity for and with organizers and advocates working to end the growing criminalization and incarceration of women, LGBTQ, trans, and gender non-conforming people of color. Interrupting Criminalization offers coordination between campaigns in national movements, support and tools for emerging movements, and political education and skill-building for the long-haul work of abolitionist world-building.

#8toAbolition, drawing on decades of abolitionist work, presents realistic and effective reforms that move us toward a world without police, where no one is held in a cage, and all people thrive and be well.

Black & Pink National is a prison abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS who are affected by that system through advocacy, support, and organizing.

Creative Interventions provides vision, tools and resources to help anyone and everyone create community-based, collective responses to domestic, family, and sexual violence. The community-based approach centers those closest to and most impacted by harm, honors their expertise, and builds collective knowledge and power as the solution to violence.

DefundPolice.org is intended to serve as a comprehensive web resource where organizers can find everything they need for their campaign to defund police in one place: information about what groups across the country are doing, resources, trainings, budget tools, and information about legislation and policies that support efforts to divest from systems of policing and punishment and invest in genuine and sustainable community safety strategies. DefundPolice.org is coordinated, housed, and staffed by the Community Resource Hub. The project is a collaboration with Movement for Black Lives, Critical Resistance, Interrupting Criminalization, PolicyLink, Law for Black Lives, Database for Police Abolition, ACRE, Advancement Project, and Black Lives Matter Canada.

Founded in June 2020, dontcallthepolice.com is an online directory of local resources available as alternatives to calling the police or 911.

M4BL is a national network of over 150 organizations creating a broad political home for Black people to learn, organize, and take action.

The City of Atlanta has leased 381-acres of Weelaunee Forest, stolen Muscogee land, to the Atlanta Police Foundation for a police military facility funded by corporations. #StopCopCity is a movement to prevent Cop City from being built.
