Digital Collections Policies

Scope

All Newcomb-Tulane College students who complete a Senior Honors Thesis or Senior Honors Project must submit a digital copy of their approved thesis or project, complete with committee signatures, to Newcomb-Tulane College for publication in the Senior Honors Theses & Projects Digital Repository (https://digitallibrary.tulane.edu/islandora/object/tulane:ntc). Electronic signatures are acceptable. The Tulane University Libraries will no longer accept or retain a hard copy. Failure to submit a digital copy to Newcomb-Tulane College by the official date of certification for degree (as established by the Registrar’s Office) may result in delay of degree conferral.

Embargoes and other requirements

Students may place a 1 or 2 year embargo on their thesis or project by submitting a request via email to ntcthesis@tulane.edu. Students or advisors who believe the thesis or project may include patentable work should also contact the Office of Technology Transfer for guidance. Embargoed theses will be stored in the repository but inaccessible to the public.

The Newcomb-Tulane College Senior Honors Theses & Projects Digital Repository is Tulane University's platform for providing access to undergraduate Senior Honors Theses and Honors Projects. Selective digital holdings begin in 2020. Senior Honors Theses submitted prior to May 2020 are held in hard copy in University Archives, Jones Hall.

Submission process

Graduating students self-submit a signed PDF of their thesis or dissertation to Newcomb-Tulane College via Canvas. Students will also submit an online Oral Defense form, to be signed by their faculty committee, where they input their own descriptive metadata. Newcomb-Tulane College will annually submit Honors Theses and Projects from December and May to Tulane University Libraries, who will review each submission for completeness and accuracy and ensure compliance with an established file naming convention. Honors Theses and Projects that do not meet criteria for publication in the digital repository will be stored in the repository under indefinite embargo and will not be accessible to the public.

Preservation

Tulane University Libraries ensures the digital preservation of archival copies of the associated digital objects, principally in PDF, via storage in the Tulane IT Data Center. This dedicated archive, known as the Repo Archive, also houses the digital preservation masters for the Tulane University Digital Library. The Repo Archive is backed up daily. Both the Tulane University Digital Library and the Newcomb-Tulane College Senior Honors Theses & Projects Digital Repository are also backed up daily by Tulane Information Technology on redundant campus servers.
