Library Digital Resources as Course Materials

Information about how to link digital resources to course materials such as syllabi or class session documents in Canvas

Streaming Media

Tulane University Libraries has large collections of music and audio-visual recordings at Howard Tilton Memorial Library's 6th floor Service Desk.  The library has also begun to lease films for educational use in streaming media format and these have been licensed for classroom use and use as course materials.

Locating films in streaming media format:  You can locate many films in streaming media format with licensed access via the Tulane campus network using Library Search box on the library home page, and then refining results to Full-text Online and Visual recordings.  Not all streaming titles available through the library are discoverable in this way.  Find additional films by exploring the streaming media databases listed on the Streaming Resources at Tulane guide.

For more information contact Media Services, located on the 6th floor of Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, at mediaservices@tulane.edu or (504) 865-5642.

Directions for Linking

Linking directly to streaming media on the Kanopy or Swank film platforms.  The following tutorial shows easy examples of how to link directly to films on both the Kanopy and Swank streaming platforms.  Kanopy hosts documentary, classic, and indie films from throughout the world.  Swank hosts more commercial releases including some top new releases plus classic, documentary, and international films.

Linking from the Library Search box on the library home page.  Library Search has records with links to films in streaming media format on publisher platforms or in databases.  You can link to the record which in turn will link students to the full text. You can also provide a link to a book or document so your students can find the call number or bibliographic information easily.

  • Locate an item using the Library Search box on the library home page, refining your display results to Visual Recording
  • Click on Permalink to display the article's persistent URL link

Copy and paste the Permalink that is displayed into the course document you intend to provide. You do not need to add any proxy information when you use the Permalink from the Library Search box on the library home page.
