Alcantara family is a close encounter with an extended family, whose origins refer to the Congo River basin in Africa. Santiago Badariotti Merlo was the butler for the parents and family of director João Moreira Salles for thirty years. He was also an eccentric man, a lover of film, theater, music and history. In 1992, when Santiago has retired, João Moreira Salles decides to make a film about him. He films him, but never edits the movie. In 2005 he returns to work on the unfinished film and discovers reflections of his own life in Santiago's memories.
