Latin America has played a distinctive role in developing the Open Access movement, particularly in the last two decades. Open access to knowledge has been identified as a public good. Academic institutions in the region have advocated for an equitable and sustainable model for open access, a non-commercial approach where the research communication primarily resides in universities and research networks and not commercial publishers. From the last decade of the twentieth century to today, pioneering initiatives such as SciELO and Redalyc have promoted open access to scholarly production in the region, increasing its visibility and expanding access to information and knowledge throughout the region, and beyond.
This Library Guide is a resource for connecting users to the major open-access initiatives from and about Latin America. It has two main sections. The first highlights initiatives that emerged from Latin America. The second presents initiatives about Latin America hosted by academic institutions outside the region, primarily universities and library networks in the United States. It also provides a section with books and articles about Open Access in Latin America.
