Physical Exhibits, The Essentials

This guide provides resources and basic information to help you create a stellar physical exhibit using one of the many library spaces.

The items listed below are generally available to use for 6th floor exhibit installations. Available cardstock colors may vary over time, please review as part of the exhibit planning process.

Matting and Resources

Why foam core? mounting one-dimensional printed images on foam core creates a sense depth and texture and generally looks more polished than a simple piece of paper. Some exhibits that are book heavy do well to mount the labels and descriptive text onto foam core.

Why card stock? When the majority of object on display are already mounted on foam core, mounting your labels on card stock helps distinguish the labels and set them apart as something other than an exhibit object. Color card stock can also be used to draw out or highlight colors in saturated images. In this case, use the card stock to create a frame (1/4" or less) around the image you're displaying.

Mounting Materials and Tools

Foam Core adds depth and finish to one-dimensional images.

Metal ruler Metal ruler, this will ensure clean, straight lines as you cut your board to size. The cork on the bottom of the ruler prevents scratches and avoids slips.

Glue sticksGlue sticks, use these to mount your images. This should obviously not go anywhere near actual books.
