Welcome to the SOCI-2650 Research Guide, where you can find resources to complete your research report and presentation for Professor Amalia Leguizamón's course, "Latin America and the Environment."

As we progress through the class, please copy and paste the links to the references you are finding into your email to me. This is a way to save your own work, and for me to ensure that I am doing my job, so I can see that you are getting results from our session!

The goal of this assignment is to research and present on an assigned case study.

To successfully complete this assignment, students have to complete the following steps:

1. Turn in a 3-4 page summary report with a list of references.
2. Create a set of 5–8 discussion questions.
3. Present in class.
4. Lead class discussion.

DUE DATE: The report and the discussion questions must be uploaded on Canvas 48-hours before your presentation. That is,

• If you present on a Monday, your deadline is the previous Saturday at 2pm.
• If you present on a Wednesday, your deadline is the previous Monday at 2pm.
• If you present on a Friday, your deadline is the previous Wednesday at 2pm.

Note that:

• 2 points will be deducated for every hour the assignment is late
• As stated on the syllabus, there no extensions will be given over technical problems.

1. SUMMARY REPORT

• A 3-4-page report summary of readings.
• This report should include:
  • The assigned reading(s) for that week/topic > Use to guide broader questions/issues. How do these connect to previous class discussions?
  • 2–3 peer reviewed articles on the topic/issue > How do these broader questions /issues unfold in your country/case study?
  • 2–3 recent news/stories/briefings > What is happening in your country of study now/recently? (in relationship to the topic of study).
• Format:
  • Single–spaced
  • Calibri 11p
  • 1” margins
• Citations & Reference List
  • Use in-text citations
  • Add a reference list (does not count towards page count)
  • Follow ASA style
• What are appropriate sources? How to find them? How to cite them?

2. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

• Create a set of 5 to 8 discussion questions to use during class discussion.
• Post them on Canvas under the Discussion Section.
• These questions should be challenging and stimulating. Focus on the general themes we are discussing and how your case study informs them.

3. CLASS PRESENTATION

• 15-20 minute in class presentation.
• Use visual resources (PPT, short videos, photos)
• This is not a summary of your readings. The goal is that you tell a story to the class about what is happening in your country of study in relationship to issues/questions/debates we are discussing that week in particular and through the semester in general.

4. CLASS DISCUSSION

• Lead class discussion (20-25 minutes).
