Hogan Jazz Archive General Research Guide

A general overview of the Hogan Jazz Archive collection and other helpful research resources for the study of jazz and the musical culture of New Orleans.

Books & Journals

The Hogan Jazz Archive collects and preserves published books and journals on New Orleans jazz, related musical genres and topics that show the cultural context that made the music possible.  Special emphasis is on Creole customs, social and professional associations and businesses pertinent to the musical life of the city, jazz pedagogy, racial diversity and local traditions.

The Archive also has a substantial collection of uncataloged journals, accessible to Special Collections staff via card catalog. Please email with any inquiries about our uncataloged journal holdings.

Search the Library Classic Catalog

The Hogan Jazz Archive's cataloged book and journal holdings are searchable in the Library's Classic Catalog.  For a more precise search, use the Advanced Search and be sure to limit your Location to "Special Collections (Jones Hall)."

Dictionaries & Encyclopedias Online

Reference resources, including a vast array of dictionaries and encyclopedias, are available for browsing in the Hogan Jazz Archive reading room.  Additionally, several music-specific dictionaries and encyclopedias are available electronically via the Library's subscription databases.
