Turchin Library: Faculty Services

Turchin Library Services that are available to A.B. Freeman School of Business faculty.

Locating Course Reserves

During the building construction Freeman School course reserves will be located at Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. Students can check out course reserve materials by presenting their Splash ID at the check-out desk at Howard-Tilton. Use the Catalog to locate materials by instructor or course name.

Submitting Course Reserves for Processing

The following types of materials may be placed on reserve:

  • Books
  • Course packs
  • Original compositions by faculty or students

Submit the items and a completed Course Reserve Request Form (see below) to the Service Desk at the Turchin Library.  Please allow up to 5 working days for library staff to process items. Items should be submitted as far in advance as possible to allow for timely processing during rush periods (e.g. the beginning of each semester).  Library staff will pull items owned by Turchin Library.  Photocopies will be placed in a folder or binder and stamped with a copyright notice.  Personal copies of materials will be labeled with call numbers and barcodes for check-out purposes.  Course Reserve materials will be processed in the order they are received.  Faculty members will be notified by email when the items are placed on Course Reserves.  Please wait for this notification before informing students that the material is available for check-out. Library staff will transport items to Howard-Tilton Memorial Library's check-out desk.

Articles and Book Chapters

Journal articles or book chapters may be placed on electronic reserve using the Canvas course management system.  This system allows professors to place copies of articles and chapters in PDF format on individual class web pages. For more information about Canvas, contact the Faculty Technology Lab at (504) 865-5000. Also, be sure to review the copyright guidelines on this page.

Canvas

The most efficient way to provide access to supplemental course material is through Canvas. Canvas can accommodate documents and multimedia items, and faculty have complete control over how and when students access this material. For more information about Canvas, contact the Faculty Technology Lab at (504) 862-8594.

Copyright Guidelines

  •  All materials placed on Course Reserves must fall within the Fair Use guidelines of the U.S. Copyright Act or have written copyright permission from the copyright holder.
  • Generally regarding copies, no more than 1-2 chapters or less than 10% of a book, one journal article from a particular issue or no more than 3 articles from a particular volume.
  • Copyright permission is required for items that do not fall under the above guidelines. This applies to electronic reserve materials (e.g. articles scanned from print or downloaded as pdfs, audio-visual material made available online, etc.) as well as printed materials.
  • The professor is responsible for obtaining and supplying to the library copyright permission from the publisher as well as signing a submission form stating that they are complying with copyright restriction.
