Coates pulls back the curtain of white privilege to reveal the physical and psychological peril of being black in America. His very personal narrative, written as a letter to his young son, will seem all too familiar to some, and shocking to others, all while challenging readers to ask questions, and then ask some more, about the American Dream. Toni Morrison rightly describes Between the World and Me as "required reading."
